COMMUNITY OUTREACH & SCHOLARSHIPS

As a non-profit, SCVWS has a public commitment to support and bring painting and the art of watermedia to the local community. Our aim is to help those with less resources to enjoy the benefits of creating art, and to extend the knowledge and appreciation of watermedia painting to everyone.

If you would like to contribute to SCVWS by making a donation, please contact our treasurer.

Annual Wayne Champion Scholarship:

  • Since 2009 the SCVWS has given an annual scholarship to a student enrolled in the Art and Design Program at San Jose State University in memory of long-time member Wayne Champion. Wayne taught in the Industrial Arts Department of SJSU for over 30 years. The student also receives a complimentary membership in the Society and receives free entry into the annual member's show. The artist can work in any medium.
  • Current Scholarship Winner: I.P.  - Background:  I am an MFA student at San Jose State University. I have a strong passion for watercolor painting and enjoy experimenting with different techniques. Recently, I have been combining watercolor with my glasswork to capture the beauty of nature in a unique way. Alongside my practical work, I have a deep love for studying art history and art criticism. I plan to use the scholarship funds to invest in high-quality watercolor supplies. I would also like to use a portion of the fund to fulfill my dream of owning a collection of books showcasing the masterpieces created by watercolor artists for continuous learning.

Charitable Donations:

  • The society donates $500 annually to San Jose State's Art Department for distribution to students who cannot afford art supplies for their classes.
  • SCVWS makes in-kind donations to other non-profit groups.
  • Purchased new chairs for Hoover Theater in San Jose, which are used for the people attending watercolor demonstrations and workshops throughout the year.
  • SCVWS donated tract lighting and new hanging rods and hooks for the hanging system at the Addison-Penzak Jewish Community Center-of Silicon Valley on Oka Road in Los Gatos, where art exhibitions are held. SCVWS hired the contractor and paid for the lights, labor to install them, and new metal hanging rods and hooks.

Public Service:

  • SCVWS provides FREE Demos by nationally known watercolor artists (as many as 8 per year) to the public.
